Editorial Reviews for  'Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym'

Satellitetvsports.com Product Description
The Bowflex PR1000 home gym is a great way to strengthen your muscles and add a bit of cardio training to the mix with over 30 strength exercises and a built-in rowing station. With up to 210 pounds of Power Rod resistance, this versatile machine helps work the abs, arms, chest, back, shoulders, and lower body. It includes triple-function hand grips for lat pull-down, a horizontal bench press, and four-inch upholstered roller cushions for leg extension and leg curl exercises. The rowing machine rail also folds when you're done with your workout

The PR1000 utilizes Bowflex's patented Power Rods, which provide resistance, or weight, that feels as good as or better than free weights--but without the inertia or risk of joint pain usually associated with free weights. You can hook one, two, three, four or all of your Power Rod units to the cable pulley system and go from as little as 5 pounds all the way up to 210 pounds of resistance.

They're precisely manufactured from a high-tech composite material under the highest quality control measures, then sheathed and tested 4 separate times to ensure quality and durability. The Power Rod units are so strong, you can flex them repeatedly but you won't be able to wear them out.

Customer Reviews for  'Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym'

Experienced user of Bowflex
The PR1000 Home gym is a great fit for me and my two sons ages 16 &12. I had an older model Bowflex from 1999, where you had to buy the lat pull down and leg curl pieces separately. My ex-husband took that Bowflex with him last year with our divorce, so I had been planning to get another one. The PR1000 is a great price in comparison to my older model, over $400 cheaper. I always got great results with the Bowflex workout, and this model provides the same. As a woman I don't use very heavy weights so this model provides plenty. My 16 year old son is pleased with the amount of weight as well, and he is the size of a full grown man. There are a couple of things I dont like in comparison to my older Bowflex. One, is that I could do reverse leg curls (laying on my stomach) on the older model, but not with the PR1000. The leg curl extenstion was configured to sit up higher on the old model so that you could fit your legs under the top piece while laying on your stomach. You can't do that with the PR1000, just the forward leg curls. The second thing is the lat pull down bar is a little more narrow, so the lat pulldown excercies for your back feels a little awkard. I do like the easier set-up and sleek look of this model, as well as the fact that you dont have to buy those pieces separately as in the older model Bowflex. Overall I am happy with my purchase.

Good Machine to get Started
Good machine for getting started. I was always considering a Bowflex, but the cost always stopped me. So, I bought cheaper set-ups that ended up as clothes racks and sold for 20% of what I paid. This machine comes with some easy workouts to get you up to speed and keep you motivated. This honestly is the first thing I have owned that I have used religously. You do need to use it to see results. I think the fact that you pay more keeps you motivated. I have lost 4 pounds in 30 days and feel better. It is well built and I don't mind swithing the cables as some have complained about. I can see how you may need more resistance eventually, but for the average guy like me if you can bench it all you're doing great. I can't yet. It was a good deal with free freight and no tax. Happy so far.

Solid machine!
I haven't used it long as I just received it, but I can tell you it's a solid machine! It is well built and it was not difficult to assemble. My wife has already used it several times and really enjoys it. What I like is that it is quiet, not making as much "clanking" noise as a machine with weight plates would make. I am happy with this purchase and plan on getting much use out of it!

Love it!
My wife has been asking for a home gym for a while, so I just bought it for her birthday. Like others it took me about two hours to put it together. I have seen complaints about having to change the pulley configs for the different workouts, but I don't feel this is any different then changing weights. This unit is fun, and makes working out pretty easy. The manual is excellent, you get one manual for assembly and another for the workouts. I do see us buying a rod pack upgrade in the future, but 210 is fine for getting use the workouts and the machine.

PR1000 adquate but get a PR3000 instead
This review is broken into the following sections:
* Ordering and Shipping
* Assembly
* Exercises
* The Machine

Ordering and Shipping:
I purchased this for a good price via Satellitetvsports. Shipping went well, product arrived in a timely manner.

Assembly:
I assembled the machine yesterday. For a short woman in her 50's whose only "helper" was her dog, I found the assembly went pretty well (4 hours). In a couple of places the instructions could have been a bit clearer. I can see how assembly would have been a snap if I had had a different helper or if I were taller - or if I already had a bowflex body :-) for tightening down all the bolts - but all it all, assembly wasn't too bad.

Exercises:
The machine includes an Owner's Manual which describes two things.

1. Various exercise routines (list of exercises) you can follow depending on your goals and current level of fitness. These purport to be aligned to adhere to the 20 mins-per-day, 3 days-per-week mantra that is part of their advertising.

2. A title of each exercise, the equipment to use for the exercise, and a drawing attempting to depict the movement being done in the exercise. This is the first place where I found the "system" to be lacking. Not having been a gym rat, I had had only minimal previous experience with gym equipment and the drawings aren't clear what movement is expected. They also provide a card that gives the initial and final position for some of the exercises, but again, no information on what one is to do to get from A to B. Between the manual, the card, and a few videos out on the Internet, I could figure out what most of the exercises are, but this area is sorely lacking. Since this is supposed to be an entry-level machine, it would have been expected that Bowflex would provide better guidance in this area. So I docked them one star for this.

The Machine:
The machine itself appears to be of good quality. And after the first workout, I am sore, which is what's to be expected. But I am an overweight, out-of-shape, 50-yr-old woman and even I could Leg Press the full weight (210lbs) on my first workout. And unfortunately, as others have observed, you cannot upgrade the PR1000.

This seems to me to be the second drawback, for which I docked them their second star. Coupled with the relatively low maximum weight, I could see the inability to upgrade being a big limitation for most men and any strong woman who is already in great shape. If that's you, I would skip this machine and spend the money on another model - or plan to supplement it.

Since I don't come anywhere near to maxing out the weight for any of the upper-torso exercises, the machine is still very useful to me. If my upper body is able to max it out in a year or two I will be delighted. But for a really effective full-body workout, I'll have to pull out my old "Thighs of Steel" and "Buns of Steel" videos to supplement my treadmill/Bowflex regimen.
