My 1st generation TiVo finally died. Plus I needed something compatible with the DTV conversion. This one is just as good. There isn't much memory space. But other than that, no complaints. |

waste of $800 |
|
after 1st one broke sent me another one for $180 -- dead on arrival, I think they should refund my lifetime service. They said I was eligible for the Premier upgrade for only $299 plus 50% off the $400 lifetime service for a total of $499 on a box which JUST had another software upgrade that they THINK will get rid of all the issues it is having. I did get one good year out of the original box but not worth $800!!! Lifetime should last more than one year without shelling out more money! |

Don't waste your money |

I've been a customer for about 6 years, in Feb I decided to upgrade to a model with HD. After 3 months it started freezing and rebooting. I called Tivo tech support many times, each time I would have to wait on hold, the tech would tell me to do something different, it would not work and I would have to call back and start over. Finally, I called to cancel service and they decided they would replace it at no charge. I sent it off and the next day they sent out a replacement. I plugged it in and within 24 hours, it was freezing and rebooting. I believe they reset the hard drive and returned to me the one I had before without resolving the problem. They now will not replace it again and because I made the mistake of buying a year subscription, refuse to refund any of that money. When calling to cancel the service, it took 7 calls to get through to a person. A recorded message would state they were too busy and to try back later. I can see why, they must be slammed with service cancellations. |

Intermittent Problems with HDMI, screen blanks an TiVo says HDMI not permitted |
Tivo is great, except (my theory is) that as of a resent firmware upgrade (that you have no control over) it has started intermittently (once an hour or so) telling me that an HDMI connection is not permitted. In the middle of a program it suddenly shows the message with a black screen. The only cure is to turn everything off and back on. It's not the signal, it happens on recorded programs and playing back the same point where the message first shows does not repeat the problem.
Tivo tech support have been fundamentally unhelful and say they "can only foresee the use of the component video cable suppied withe the Tivo" rather than HDMI.
I beleive this is a software glitch, Tivo is being overly sensitive or has a new bug, and Tivo's own diagnostics confirm that my equipment and the HDMI connection is indeed HDCP complient. Nothing has changed at my end.
If you want to buy a DVR, I suggest looking at another solution until they resolve this, unless you are OK with a non HDMI connection.
This is my second TiVo and I have been very happy until now. Some niggling little features are missing and the UI can be slow and unresponsive at times, but Tivo itself is great in most regards.
